No one knows. There is no mention of Shakespeare in any records for seven years. These are sometimes called the "lost years." All we know is that in 1585 he was a young father with an uncertain future in Stratford and in 1592 he was an actor in London who was beginning to make a name for himself as a playwright. We don’t know how or why he became an actor or what gave him the idea that he could write plays.
