...in comparison to all the 60-year olds of his father's generation in the court. No one Hamlet's age (Horatio, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern) calls him "youth". It's everyone whose still in power (Polonius, Claudius, Gertrude). I saw a production once where this age difference was played as one of the cenral contentions of the play for precisely this reason. It really worked well, justifying alot his harsh words to Gertrude in the closet scene -- she *is* too old to be playing these type of shenanigans.Posted by Justin Bacon on March 21, 1997 at 16:42:35
