...a note or two on Caliban...

I have only a few notes on Caliban remaining from the ENG 312
class I took a couple of semesters ago. I might have remembered
more had the character had interested me as much as he has you...

"caliban" -- gypsy word for "black" or "blackness"
also, Arabic for "vile dog"

I believe the character has roots in comedia del arte as Pautinello,
but I may be wrong on that one...
There are plenty of good books on the character, one I remember
in particular is just called "Shakespeare's Caliban"...
