Like almost all of WS's characters, Shylock is neither all villian
nor all victim. Neither are you. WS attempted to humanize the much-
demonized Jew. Yes, he displayed despicable emotions, but wasn't he
also treated despicably?
Would WS put the "DO we not bleed" speech in the mouth of a char-
acter he hoped the audience would hate? Read the text carefully.
My most recent Shakespeare professor took a very liberal stance
about the author's politics. He felt that WS,above all,
attempted to champion society's traditional underdogs.
A good book to read is "Shakespeare, Left and Right" edited
