Shylock probably villain

We're studying Merchant of Venice in our class also--I'm not
sure if your teacher explained this but in Shakespeare's time
Jews were not common in England and so they were often mis-
represented as villains. So it is probable that he is meant
to be the villain. I believe that there is another version of
the play in which Shylock is the good guy and the victim. I
don't have any quotes for you though and I don't think I have
an answer for the second question! :)
