Alas...

Alas, many of Sh's characters ARE fairly one-dimensional (Tell me 17 differences between Rosencrantz and Guildenstern), and, alas, that is frequently true of his women. While some are startlingly complex and fascinating, at other times he seems to use them just as plot devices and set decoration. And one recurring example is the ingenue/virgin. There ARE differences between Ophelia, Miranda, Desdemona, Bianca, Hero, etc., but not a whole lot. It may in fact be a legitimate criticism of Sh that Ophelia is not developed as fully as Hamlet, but it is a fact.
