A lot of the works you mentioned are translated. I can forgive
a translation, but I have to forgive it. (I read the Canterbury
Tales in the original, too.) Many -- in fact, most -- work of
the 20th century -- and most of the 19th -- is written by people
who attempt to "relate" to their readers, not interest them.
Their characters are the sort I don't care about, and their
writing style is low and vulgar. If I want a life like that,
I'll live it -- not read it. As for majoring in English, I plan
to be a professor and author, and perhaps draw attention to
critically ignored science fiction (which is NOT George Orwell!)Posted by Alvin Sidwick on March 27, 1997 at 08:58:24
