Aside from the fact that it would be reasonable for S to be familiar with the work of the greatest English dramatist up to him (They were born in the same year, Marlowe started younger, and died just as S was starting), we know for a fact that S had read him; there is a direct reference in As You Like It. So this is almost certainly a conscious echo, possibly an in-joke, possibly a suggestion that Richard (anachronistically) would use self-consciously "poetic" language.Posted by Hamlet on April 01, 1997 at 09:43:15
