I have started reading Shakespeare's late romances because
of their relationship to the tragedies as outlined by
E.M.W. Tillyard in a book from 1962. There are so many
sources out there on the romances that I was wondering
if anyone could make a suggestion for a good essay or book
to read on them or does anyone have any thoughts on the
romances relationship to the tragedies. Finally, the
character of Paulina in "The Winter's Tale" interests
me in that she speaks up to Leontes when he unjustly
accuses his wife of having an affair, then apologizes
for speaking to harshly but then concelas his wife from
him for 16 years as a punishment. The range of actions makes
it hard for me to pin her down. Any thoughts on Paulina?Posted by Steven on April 02, 1997 at 15:18:59
