Iago's lack of advancement in the ranks needs to be taken into
a military context and into the context of the Shakes treatment
of Othello. Given his service, Iago had every right to expect
the promotion. Particulary in the light of the fact that
he served Othello so well.Othello had the respect of venetians, but was treated sort
of as an uncessary evil, unable to ever overcome his race.
Iago--ever ambitious-- it could be argued that service to a great
general like O' (knowing everyone's true feelings about him)
would assure his advancement. O' on the other hand totally went
against all military protocal by passing him over (this assumes
he is not aware of his deviousness.
