Shakespeare's source, Holinshed, got it wrong. He thought that Scotland, like England, had an inherited monarchy and so Macbeth stole the throne from Malcolm. But Scotland's king was elected. Had Duncan died naturally, Macbeth, as a war hero, might well have been elected.
