prose in Hamlet

Perhaps I've overlooked something glaringly obvious, but what is the significance of the prose passages in Hamlet?
I've been through several Shakespeare and Hamlet resource books and can find no references to Shakespeare's departure from poetry. I've found that the prose passages in Romeo and Juliet were used to highlight the speech of the "courser" characters, but that generalization doesn't work for Hamlet.
