An age old debate

There's no question but that Hamlet has - for this and other
reasons - a richness of reference relevant to Shakespeare's
time which is lost in some approaches. But by the same
token, it (and other plays) can be made quite strikingly modern in ways that
bring out emphases which might be played down in a production
based on historical verisimilitude. It's just a question
of what you want from your theater.
