Definitely is too strong a word.

There were accusations about sodomy which circulated
around James from very early in his life until his death.
He clearly had male favorites at court who aroused a
great deal of resentment. But for one thing, he was not
"gay" in our sense of the word - he was married and had
several children. And for another, the conemporary
sources for these reports can be questioned in various
ways. We know what was said, not what was done.
