Antonio decidely adds to the traditional extended family living
within the household. I guess his purpose really comes out in
the end- when they need a father for the "second" Hero.
As far as portraying Antonio, the big scene is when he and
Leonato challenge Claudio and the prince. I've seen it done
two ways: As truly upset, protective fathers foaming at the
mouth and as a slapstick comic with the two elders trying to
swing punches, etc.
I prefered the "mad" approach, mostly because I felt the
audience was distracted by the physical comedy of the second
