well, i'm not sure they really were,

in the sense that we think of today. It certainly wasn't
profitable in any respect compared to Broadway today.
I looked up the numbers on this once, and again, as in
all of this, it's difficult to come to an accurate assessment,
but Shakspere spent close to 1000 pounds on property in
Stratford and and had holdings in London with the Globe and
other buildings, and the theater just didn't make that kind
of money, at least not for a single man. He wasn't getting
royalties on the plays, and though quartos of the plays
were being sold, it was rarely profitable to publish in those
days. The folio probably brought him some money, but he
was dead. So, if you can find those figures, it might go
shed some light on just how profitable the Globe theater was.
