Shakey interpretation

Surely prof, if every generation has interpreted shakey to support its own ideology/politics etc, then we as a race can interpret these archaic texts anyway we like. If coleridge can do ,and Dryden then why can't we. Not just literal interpretations as of nursury rhymes, but subjective(aren't we all) views is ,at the end of the day , all we're going to get - and all we've had so far.
