Counter seems to have gotten restarted in error

Well darn - this isn't going to be easy to fix.

Sometime after the "Why Does Shakespeare use Irony, Love, and death in his works?" posting the counter used to number messages seems to have reset itself to 1 - which is going to lead to ghost replies to all messages posted before and after that with the same number.

And right now I don't have read or write permission to the messages themselves except over the web...

Unfortunately, the engine for this board does have read/write permission, so it's systematically writing over the old postings with the new ones.

The best I can do immediately is reset the counter to a much higher number tonight. At least that will stop the loss of earlier messages.

Straightening everything out will take longer, unfortunately...as will putting some kind of verification subroutine in so that the counter won't go haywire again.
