too simplistic

So, is interpreting shakespeare according
to shakespeare's era too simplistic??? After all,
Hamlet seems to have strong references to catholicism
and there were some very strong views in that country regarding
marrying someone's brother. . . any way, I feel like such
a dope when i try to interpret this using the text and the
footnotes, rather than contemporary commentary.
Thanks, Hamlet for the tip on the book. Perhaps I'll try
to dig thru it.
