Death

We don't know. There is a wholly unfounded legend (first appearing a half-century later) that he stayed up late drinking, caught a fever, and died. There may be a grain of truth to it: in those pre-antibiotic days, something as simple as the flu could kill you. Modern medical researchers have shown repeatedly that an extraordinary number of people die on their birthdays, anniversaries or other significant dates: evidently the terminally ill "hang on" to some key date and then relax.
