The plays are clearly the work of one mind - a great one.
As an actor and director, I can attest that they are also the work
of a practical man of the Theatre. Their structure assure us of that.
Who else would have written them? Was Shakespeare a "front" for a
genius playwrite who was an aristocrat? (The theatre, though enjoyed,
by the aristocracy and even the Queen, was not a legitimate endeavor -
one step above protitution.) This has been argued because
of the great understanding of statecraft evident in this work.
Also, the play's reveal a great knowledge of Falconry - a hobby or
sport enjoyed exclusively by the aristocracy. Some have argued that Shakespeare's
background wouldn't allow this kind of knowledge. However, I think that's
horse shit. He also had a great knowledge of herbs, flowers, and plants.
Does that mean the plays were written by a gardener?
We've got better things to do than debate this silly ass question.
For instance, we could spend our time reading, performing, and watching
his work performed. All in all, a much better use of our time,
don't you think?Posted by Terry The Bard Fan on March 23, 1997 at 00:11:15
