The merchants of the day hated the theatre. Without lighting the plays had to be performed during midday.
So, apprentices would skip out of work and go to the theatre.
They're labor force was all they cared about. so, they hated the theatre.
Also, the Puritans, a growing religous sect were adamantly apposed to any activity
that involved pleasure. Theatre was very high on their hit list.
In fact, they shut the theatre down for decades. This was followed by
the "Reformation", when prositutes actually performed in the theatre.
This explains the racy, bawdy nature of Reformation plays.
