Foil

Do you know what a foil is? It's a character with enough plot or personality similarities to Hamlet that putting them side by side lets us see his differences. For example: both Laertes and Hamlet want to revenge their fathers' deaths. Do they react differently? Does that tell us something about Hamlet? Both Ophelia and Hamlet react to their fathers' deaths. Both Fortinbras and Hamlet are ambitious young princes. Both Horatio and Hamlet are intellectuals back from college. And so on.
