On the other hand ...

It's not a meaningless issue. Ask, for example, whether
it would be appropriate to perform Othello in an African
country, or Merchant of Venice in Israel.

Othello passes the test with flying colours - I know, because
I've taught it in Nigeria, and the students were very
appreciative and wanted to put it on "in negative" - white
Othello and the rest of the cast black. Only needs a few
minor word changes.

I don't know about Merchant of Venice, though. (Or "Taming
of the Shrew anywhere near any woman with self respect.)
