It may be worth noticing that Prospero himself does no magic in the play; he has the power to order Ariel and his fellow spirits about, and THEY have supernatural powers. In effect, Prospero is a scientist: if we assume that fairies and spirits exist as part of the natural world, he has learned how to manipulate nature for his purposes.
