Wrong direction

Shakespeare himself was probably Catholic or a Catholic sympathizer, but downplayed religion in his plays as Elizabeth etc. was fighting Rome, Spain, and various internal forces (to say nothing of Mary to the North) that were plotting to restore England to the Roman Catholic sphere. Shaekspeare, being a loyal subject, and a Tudor apologist, did nothing to rock the boat. James I, on the other hand, was much more of a religious autocrat, and during his reign a lot more non-Church of England believers found it wise to convert or flee the country.
