I have begun reading the late romances on my own
and would appreciate a little direction. Can anyone point
me in the direction of some good modern essays or books
which discuss the romances. Also, I have a question
about Paulina in "The Winter's Tale." She reminds me of
Emilia from "Othello" with her willingness to tell a male
leader that he is wrong. I admire that strength of her
character, but am puzzled why she begins to apologize to
Leontes after the death of Hermione and their son. I
understand her compassion for the king at that moment may
soften her, but I do not see the need to apologize. She
has spoken justly and her submissiveness at this moment
appears to diminish the strength and singularity of her
character. Any other thoughts or opinions?Posted by Steven on March 31, 1997 at 08:49:24
