Iago and Machiavelli: Connections???

Is Iago (of Othello) a Machiavellian man? That is to say, is Iago effective in implanting fear into his relationships or would he be more effective if he had been kindhearted? Is Shakespeare placing Iago into Othello for the simple reason of humanistic convention?
