Revenge isn't the real theme of the play.

Revenge is not the real theme of the play. It is merely a smoke screen or cover for what Shakespeare really wanted to write about without getting thrown in jail. It seems to me that he is more interested in looking at the dysfunctional relationships in these families and that the dysfunctionality is brought about by too much testosterone and patriarchal power. Look more at the women in this play (only two) and look at how often Hamlet himself is described as "not a man." Laertes too is distressed that he has the womanly attribute of crying. This is a rich play and you have many possibilities for a thesis. You need to look past revenge or if you are intent on the revenge theory, you might want toconsider looking at how damaging it is to familial relationships.

Good luck!
