That there is a new guy is clear: the other two ask him who he is, and he says Macbeth sent him. It can't be Macbeth, since he is genuinely surprised by the news Fleance got away when they report it later. He is frequently played by the actor who plays Seyton, M's right-hand man later in the play. The point seems to be to show M's growing paranoia, that he sends a spy on his own men. But it may be something as simple as that in rehearsal they discovered the scene didn't work with only two men, so he wrote in a couple of lines to allow for a third.Posted by Hamlet on March 19, 1997 at 10:17:01
