Was Hamlet in fact mad?

In my depth study of Hamlet at Canterbury, I am interested in exploring the notion of Hamlet being *really* mad, and not simply playing "pretend". I would love to hear your comments/feedback on this notion, and to what extent you can argue that he was in fact mad or not mad throughout the play.
