I think an important feature of Oth. is the color of his skin. I think it may also have made a big impact on the Elezabeathan audience to see the Moor with Des. Shakespeare points out the problems in Oth. by making his hero an outsider, one who doesn't quite fit into the society where he lives. Even in the beginning he is held in suspician and is accused of seducing Des. with his charms. He stands apart, as a man of another race and from another country.
