Hamlet

Although the witches are an influence on Macbeth there is no evidence to suggest they are nothing more. There is no sign that Shakespeare meant the actions of Macbeth to be forced on him by an external power, whether that of thw witches or of Hecate. The prophecies are merely dangerous circumstances with which he has to deal.
