From someone who adores the play...

I am currently directing SHREW, and this is a question I have pondered for weeks. My conclusion is that Kate was tamed to some degree, but that for the most part she just grew up a little. Kate's entire life she has been expected to be a shrew, she has been treated badly by her family, and they have tried to beat her down. When Petruchio comes along and shows her some honest, positive attention, she out grows her shrewishness, and both of them change by the end of the play. So, yes, she changed, but no, she wasn't completely tamed, and Prtruchio changed too.
