Horatio is there because.....

Horatio sort of serves as the reassuring aspect in Hamlet's life. With all the things that go wrong -- his mom marrying his uncle, his friends Ros and Guil betraying him by spying on him, and even his girlfriend Ophelia giving in to do the same,,,,, well, Horatio stays loyal to him. That is why it is necessary that Horatio sees the ghost too, whereas Gertrude doesn't see it. If Hamlet would have seen it when no one else did, he would have thought that he's insane,,,,, but since Horatio sees it too, he knows it actually happened. Horatio is sort of the storyteller. He's there at the opening scene, he's there when the story ends and everyone dies. He's there at the gravediggers scene as well. ok, maybe that gives you some hints.
