I produce Shakespeare with teenagers - many of them stumble in off the corner because they are cold and slowly get hooked by watching rehearsals. The next thing you know, they move closer to the front row. Then they begin coming back, eventually many get up on the stage...it is gratifying to watch them get excited about learning anything, isn't it?Shakespeare competes. I don't have to change a thing in his plays to relate them to 90's kids. When we discuss them, we relate events and characters to people and events today, but
we don't try to put them in a modern context. They get it.I think what they love most about him is that no one can tell them that their opinions are wrong and there's very little in high school that can be disputed. Mine occassionally get fired up enough about an idea they might have about a character (often Hamlet) to actually go to the library on their own and try to document it. I don't work in the school system now, but I have. A lot of bright kids get lost there. I'm glad we've got teachers like you pulling for them. Hang in there!
