plot

in order for the plot of Othello to work, O. must have some obvious reason for deep insecurity...without it, Iago would have nothing to latch onto--prey upon. since the Elizabethans weren't the most enlightened bunch, O.'s complexion would have been a big deal...it would be natural to assume that O. would see his race as a liablity, something D. would have to overlook in order to love him. Shakespeare could have used a blue alien to prove his point...yet, in the four hundred or so years since it was written
the race issue in O. has become more relevant, so although it was concieved as a plot device, race, especially the beastial imagery used with it, has become significant in Othello.
