Does anyone know the significance of the color yellow to Hymen?
One copy of As You Like It (I think the Arden edition) has stage direction in the wedding scene of "Enter Hymen in a saffron robe". But my Folger's copy says nothing about color, just "Enter Hymen with Rosiland and Celia". I know that there can be textual differences between editions but this makes little sense. Shakespeare, that I can recall, never says anything about characters clothing in stage directions, so this seems important. But I cannot find a single mythological source to tell me the color significance. If any one knows help would be appreachiated--its not for any assignment, just plain curosity. Thanks.Posted by Kim on April 09, 1997 at 13:44:28
