Pride

If you look at Richard of Goucester you can see his evolution through practicing each of the seven deadly sins to some degree until he arrives at an all consuming pride. He *knows* he is better and can defeat anyone else. It is at this point of evolution that we meet Lear, who's own pride leads to his anger and downfall.
