That's as good a theory as any. Seriously, it IS one of the explanations offered, and the strongest evidence is that S goes out of his way to show us that H is depressed BEFORE meeting the ghost. They were very aware of what we would call clinical depression, and what they called melancholy; if yours is a research project, read Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy and see how well it describes H.
