Information on the relationship between Kent and the Fool in King Lear

What I am trying to find is some insight as to why, in appearance, King Lear has placed so much confidence in a fool and an outcast?

I've done a brief search in "Shakespeare Quarterly" but have yet to find anything significant.

Please let me know if anyone has any ideas on the subject.

Thanks
