Unfortunately the popular perception of the Oedipus Complex is the simplistic, sensationalistic one. And - fortunately or unfortunately - there is an endless stream of students who know only that version. It's not that someone out there refuses to hear you; it's that it's always someone new who hasn't heard you. I'd suggest a FAQ section, except that experience (see all my "Asked and Answered" entries) shows that each new kid doesn't even bother looking at previous queries, and isn't likely to check out a FAQ section before posting a familiar query once again. 'Tis the burden we bear, to have to be willing to explain who really wrote Shakespeare and whether Hamlet really is mad and what Sonnet 73 says and what the Oedipus Complex is, over and over. Just keep telling yourself that for the asker it's the first time.Posted by Hamlet on April 11, 1997 at 09:32:12
