It is certainly true, from watching several groups of actresses wrestle with the roles, that S gives them very little to work with, and they almost have to impose characterizations onto the figures, rather than drawing them out of the words. (For example, Diana Rigg's marvelous Regan in the TV Olivier version is all just Diana Rigg shtick). Here's a case where deconstruction may come to your assistance: by showing that every critic and every actress tries to find something different in them, you may be able to make the case that there is little solid in them to limit the diversity.Posted by Hamlet on April 19, 1997 at 11:56:34
