It is the opinion of many scholars that Don John the Bastard
from Much Ado About Nothing is one of the building blocks
on which Shakespeare built his later, great villians, like
Iago. The hunger of Don John for evil deeds is part jealousy,
part simple deriving of pleasure from others' pain. It is
much the same with Iago, but Iago is a far more complex
character than the earlier Don John. Though many things do
move Iago, don't forget the Shakespearian concept of a
villian for his own sake.Posted by Peter on April 13, 1997 at 15:04:41
