Portia was very well dowered and as such drew many suitors - this strengthens the arguement that to assure Jessica's dowery Shylock would make every effort. Cordelia was sent undowered to France as a punishment. Angelo (MM)breaks his prenuptial vows because of the absense of dowery. Dowerless Queen Margaret (Henry VI-2) was considered a bad bargain. Undowered Helena though a superior woman is distained by Bertram. (AWTEW)
