I think the signifigance of Fortinbras was the fact that Hamlet's father was so esteemed because he had defeated Fortinbras or his father, I don't remember, and in Hamlet's search for revenge against his father's murder he lost everything that his father had worked for, including his beautiful wife, Gertrude, his right-hand man Polonius, and the kingdom he had fought Fortinbras for. Fortinbras took the kingdom that Hamlet's father had fought so valiantly for thereby losing everything that he had fought for.
