Ophelia

How would you feel if someone very close to you was killed? Then, think about how you would feel if that person was your father. Then think about how you would feel if your only other family member was away and out of contact (say, with the military). THEN, think about how you would feel if the guy you were totally in love with was the one responsible for killing your father. Then, on top of that, think of how you would feel if you tried to talk to your lover and he spurned you, refusing to ever look at you again. Wouldn't you feel just the slightest bit suicidal by then?
Ophelia becomes a desperately insane woman as madness is the only way she has to escape from the agonies of her life. Her madness heightens as she cannot understand what is going on around her, and finally, being treated like a caged animal, she runs away and dies so that she might live a better life wherever her tortured soul may go.
Hope this is helpful!
