Think of Othello as a tragedy of intrigue and personality flaws.
Iago is the director of the intrigue, he understands the personalities of the other characters and uses this knowledge. Othello wrongly perceives Desdemona's love as 'pity' and then sees her pity Cassio, and thinks this is love. Cassio goes over the top in his praise of Desdemona. Desdemona does not know Othello's personality at all, they spent little time alone before marriage. Iago's tragedy is his misconception of his own wife's heroics.
