Here's an interesting take on Prospero's abandonement of his art. Maybe the root of magic in the play was the island. Sycorax, Ariel, and Pros were the only ones who could use it and they never were reported to have used magic off the island. Maybe Prospero realized he was leaving the island, the source of his magic, and decided to make it public that he was ditching his magic so people would think it is his choice, not that he was dependant on the island.Posted by KMAN on March 23, 1997 at 12:00:11
