c.f. Olivier

There is the famous story of Tyrone Guthrie directing Laurence Olivier as Iago to Ralph Richardson's Othello in the 1930s or 1940s. Guthrie and Olivier decided Iago was gay, but they waited until late in rehearsals to spring the idea on Richardson: at the end of an intense scene Olivier kissed Richardson. "What the hell was that?" said RR. "He's a pouf," said LO. Richardson put on his hat and walked out, saying "I'm going home until you two come to your senses." The subject never came up again.
